Scientific Context
The California Nebula (NGC 1499) is a large emission nebula in the constellation Perseus, named for its resemblance to the outline of California. This nebula spans about 2.5 degrees across the sky and is illuminated primarily by the nearby hot star Xi Persei.
The nebula is best observed in hydrogen-alpha light, where its characteristic shape and internal structure become readily apparent. This narrowband image reveals the intricate filamentary details throughout the nebula's extent.
