Scientific Context

The Iris Nebula (NGC 7023) is a bright reflection nebula in the constellation Cepheus. Unlike emission nebulae that glow from ionized gas, reflection nebulae shine by reflecting and scattering light from nearby stars. The characteristic blue color comes from the preferential scattering of blue light by dust particles.

The central star illuminating the nebula is surrounded by a complex structure of dust lanes and reflection regions, creating the flower-like appearance that gives the nebula its name.
