Scientific Context
The Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237) is a large emission nebula in the constellation Monoceros. The nebula's distinctive circular shape with a central cavity gives it a skull-like appearance, earning it the nickname "Skull Nebula."
The central cavity was carved out by stellar winds from the hot O-type stars in the central cluster NGC 2244. These massive stars ionize the surrounding hydrogen gas, causing it to glow in the characteristic red color of hydrogen-alpha emission.
